In the beginning, writing in interval notation including and vs. or was confusing for me because I was used to using inequality symbols,  x and y for domain and range.  Taking notes on what symbols meant not equal to and equal to for interval notation, inequalities and dots on the graph helped me understand how to use interval notation correctly.
